Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Knows the general characteristics of plant viruses and their distinctive features from other plant pathogens.
2) Understands the formation of virus infection and the mechanism of virus biosynthesis in the host cell.
3) Recognizes the symptoms of important viral diseases in plants and distinguish them from other abiotic and biotic diseases.
4) Knows theoretically virus isolation and reproduction methods.
5) Has knowledge about virus diagnosis and diagnostic methods.
6) Has information about virus transmission routes and primary infection sources.
7) Knows virus control methods and makes some suggestions.

Course Contents

This course covers below topics; General characteristics of phytopathogenic viruses, their classification, disease inducing mechanisms, host-virus relationships, transport and transmission routes, diagnostic methods in viral diseases, basic information on the control of viral diseases.

Weekly Schedule

1) Important events in the development of virology discipline
2) General characteristics of viruses
3) Morphological and chemical structures of viruses. Reproduction of viruses = Biosynthesis
4) Virus infection stages (Introduction, Separation of capsid protein, Virus Replication, Movement from Cell to Cell, Long Distance Movement within the Plant)
5) Virus taxonomy and classification, macroscopic symptoms
6) Microscopic symptoms of viruses.
7) Transport and ways of transmission of plant viruses: 1. Transport by vaccination with generative and vegetative propagation materials.
8) Transport of Plant Viruses by Vectors: Transport by Insects
9) Transport with mites
10) Transport with vectors in the Protista and the Fungi
11) Transport by nematode vectors and abiotic factors
12) Transport by plant sap (Mechanical Transport)
13) Virus isolation and diagnostic methods
14) Control methods of virus diseases
15) Final Exam
