Course Contents

Teaching various sources discussing and explaining the philosophical foundations of Turkish and world music, discussing new ideas.

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction to Philosophy. What is philosophy? Who is a philosopher? What are the main topics of philosophy?
2) Ancient philosophy. The first philosophers. Pythagoras' definitions of "philosophy" and "philosopher"
3) Philosophy of Art. Theories of Art and Aesthetics. How to establish a relationship between music and philosophy. The views of ancient philosophers about music.
4) Hermetism and music. Hermes' musical thoughts.
5) The idea of music from Hermes to Pythagoras. "The planets make music as they rotate"
6) Music and the Kosmos
7) The musical thought of Confucianism.
8) Midterm exam
9) Plato and Aristotle's music thoughts. Modes and human emotions.
10) The musical thoughts of St Boethius. The ontological meaning of church teaching and church music
11) Medieval thought. St Augustinius, Thomas Aqunio and rationalism. Reason against church dogmatism.
12) Formation of the 8th and 10th century Islamic world of thought. Introduction of Aristotle's rationalism from Farabi and Averroes (Ibn Rusd) to the West.
13) The introduction of Aristotelian rationalism to the West and Aristotelian rationalism against the Church.
14) Islamic rationalism, metaphysics and music. First Islamic music thinkers: Al-Kindi, Farabi and Ibn Sina
15) Studies on the philosophy of music in Turkey
16) Final Examination
