Course Contents

This course covers; Compaction of soils, Distribution of stress in soils, Shear Strength of Soil, Lateral Soil Pressure, Bearing Capacity of Soils, Consolidation in soils.

Weekly Schedule

1) Compression and the effects of soil properties
2) Compression experiments and control in the field
3) Calculation of stress increase under various loads
4) Graphical representation of the stress changes with depth, and installation
5) In the ground breaking and breaking conditions, the stress Mohr circle and Mohr-Coulomb failure theory
6) Shear (cut) with laboratory experiments to determine the parameters of stress
7) Calculation of lateral earth pressures behind retaining structures
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Calculation of shear and overturning controls retaining structures
10) Safety soil pressure and the calculation of Safety soil pressure
11) Field tests to determine the bearing capacity and calculations of the simple bearing capacity
