Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) List the properties of the healthy drinkable water.
2) Define the illnesses caused by the pathogen microorganisms and chemicals in water.
3) Interpret the drinking water standards (TS-266)
4) List the basic processes which are used in potable water treatment.
5) List the chemical substance properties which are used for coagulation.
6) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of chlorination and ozonation.
7) List the chemicals and their characteristics to be used to control the odour and flavour to remove the manganese and iron.
8) Define the disadvantages of hardness in drinking water, chemicals which are used for removing hardness.

Course Contents

This course includes properties of the drinking water.Collecting tanks, Aeration, Coagulation and flocculation, Settling, Filtration, Disinfection, Odour and taste control, Iron and manganese removal, Hardness removal, Ion exchange,Properties of hard water.

1) Properties of the drinking water
2) Microbial contamination of drinking water and diseases, chemicals contamination of drinking water
3) Water quality standards, treatment objectives.
4) Aeration unit, aerator types
5) Coagulation and flocculation ,coagulant chemicals.
6) Coagulation and flocculation ,coagulant chemicals.
7) Settling basin, clarifier types.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Filtration and mechanism of filtration
10) Removal methods of pathogenic microorganisms in drinking water
11) Odour and taste control, chemicals properties which are used for this purpose
12) Iron and manganese removal , chemicals which are used for removal of iron and manganese
13) Hardness forming substancess, water hardness removal methods and chemicals which are used for this purpose
14) Mechanism of ion exchange
15) Exploring Yuvacık Dam drinking water treatment plant
