Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Explain the general characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms.
2) Make a distinction between microbiological and mycological media and implement the methods of preparing media.
3) Implements the bacteriological and mycological methods of cultivation and makes the evaluation of cultures.
4) Make antibiotic susceptibility tests and evaluate of the results.
5) Implement decontamination, sterilization and disinfection methods and interpret of the results.
6) Explain the mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics and associate with bacterial genetics.
7) Make microscopic examination of the cultures of superficial fungal diseases and pathogenic fungi are ready, apply the methods of microscopic examination.

Course Contents

Introduction to Basic Microbiology and classification and general characteristics of microorganisms. Bacterial cell structures and Micro-organisms and micro-organisms from the normal flora of the human relations. Types of infection and transmission routes of infection. Rules of safe working in the laboratory, the use of a microscope, microscope types and methods of microscopy. Microbiological media preparation methods and media types. Sampling of the patients, evaluation of media, planting methods and cultures. Antibiotics and antibiotic susceptibility testing techniques for evaluation of the results. Genetics of Bacteria and their effects on bacteria, antibiotics and resistance mechanisms in bacteria. Methods of disinfection and sterilization applications. Basic mycological concepts and general characteristics of pathogenic fungi. The patients with fungal disease and fungal sampling.

4) Micro-organisms and micro-organisms from the normal flora of the human relations.

15) Mycological preparation, immunohistochemical staining, direct microscopic identification and evaluation of fungi culture mediums and methods of cultivation.
