Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Explain the basic concepts related to immunology.
2) Perform tests and evaluate the results of antigens and antibodies.
3) Explain the basic mechanisms of the immune defense system against infections.
4) Implement Serological tests for diagnosis of Infectious Diseases.
5) Make routine diagnostic tests (ELISA, IFA, RIA, etc.) and evaluate the results.
6) Comment to the biological effects of radiation and apply radiation protection measures.
7) Implement Nuclear medicine laboratory tests RIA , evaluate the results.

Course Contents

Introduction to immunology and a brief history of Immunology. Antigen and the general features of antigenic substances. Immune system organs and immunological functions. Hemopoiesis, immune system cells, and immunologic functions. Types of interferon and interleukin, the basic immunological functions. Types of immunoglobulins, general characteristics and immunological functions. Natural resistance to infection and immune response mechanisms of defense. Serology and basic concepts. Basic serological tests and operating principles. Agglutination Test application, ELISA and EIA, diagnostic methods, working principles and application areas. Vaccines, vaccine types, the benefits of immunization and immune sera. The formation of inflammation and immunology of infectious diseases. Hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases. Introduction to Nuclear Medicine and basic knowledge of radiation. Biological effects of radiation and radiation protection. Radiation-related legislation. Radioimmunoassay method, basic principles. RIA quality control and RIA diagnostic methods.
