Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Define the basic concepts of parasitologic, comment the harmful effects of parasites.
2) Explain Parasite and parasite-host relationships and environment and define the symbiotic forms of life.
3) Comment parasitic zoonoses and public health effects of environmental hazards.
4) Define the epidemiological characteristics of protozoan diseases, and perform laboratory diagnostic tests.
5) Define the epidemiological characteristics of helmintic diseases, and perform laboratory diagnostic tests.
6) Define basic concepts related to Medical Entomology.
7) Define the vectors of medical importance and comment the impact of parasitic diseases transmitted by vectors.

Course Contents

Introduction to parasitology and classification of medical parasites. Environment, parasite-host interactions and parasitism. Resources of parasitic diseases and geographical spread of vectors. General definitions Protozoology and biology of important medical protozoa. The epidemiology of diseases of the blood and tissue protozoa. Gatrointestinal protozoan disease epidemiology. General Helmithological definitions. Biologic and epidemiological features of medical helminths. General characteristics of trematode parasites and diseases. General characteristics of cestode parasites and diseases. General characteristics of nematode parasites and diseases. The basic principles of parasitological diagnosis, laboratory studies, and laboratory safety. Blood and tissue protozoan diseases, laboratory diagnostic methods. Gatrointestinal system protozoan diseases, laboratory diagnostic methods. Helmintiases laboratory diagnostic methods. Medical arthropodologic defines and vectors-borne parasitic diseases and the struggle for ecology and prevent outbreaks.

1) Introduction to parasitology, definitions and classification of medical parasit.
2) Environment, the parasite - host relationships and parasitism, sources, the geographic spread of parasitic diseases.
3) Common definitions and important medical protozoons and their biology.
4) Blood and tissue protozoan diseases (Malaria, Leishmaniosis,Toxoplasmosis), epidemiology.
5) Gatrointestinal protozoan diseases (Giardiosis, Amibiasis, İsosporidiosis, Cryptosporidiosis), and epidemiology.
6) General helminthologic definitions, biology and epidemiological characteristics of important helminths.
7) General characteristics of trematode parasites and diseases (fascioliasis, paragonomiasis, scyhtosomiasis ).
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) General characteristics of cestode parasites and diseases (teniais, hymenolopiasis, hydatidosis and alveococcosis).
10) General features of nematode parasites and diseases (enterobiasis, ascariais, trichinosis,).
11) The basic principles of parasitological diagnostic laboratories and laboratory safety.
12) Blood and tissue protozoan diseases (Malaria, Leishmaniosis,Toxoplasmosis), and laboratory diagnostic methods.
