Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Recognizing wind and solar energy resources. Learning characteristic features of wind energy, energy density, and maximum theorical limitation converting into motion energy. Determining peak speed in turbines according to wind energy charecteristic and effect of the peak spead on the energy production. Learning important points for choosing wind energy production regions, effects of the geographic conditions, arrangement of wind turbines. Evaluating measurement results and feasibility study for energy production. Finding out the differences between synchronous and asynchronous generators directly connected to the grid and operating asynchronous machine under the synchronous frequency as an asynchronous generator. Recognizing the applications and control algorithms of permanent magnet synchronous machines and brushless dc machines used for wind generator. Developing maximum power point tracking algorithms for wind and solar energy. Learning the characteristics and modeling of solar cells. Comparing fixed and moving systems.

Course Contents

Common features of renewable energy resources and favorite types. Characteristics and density of wind energy, maximum theorical limitation converting into motion energy. Horizontal and vertical turbines, peak speed in turbines, effect of the peak spead on the energy production and determining peak speed according to wind energy charecteristic. Important points for choosing wind energy production regions, effects of the geographic conditions, arrangement of wind turbines.
