Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Fundamentals of linear theory of elasticity and its application to the strength analysis of special types of structures.
2) Formulate governing equations and boundary conditions for quasi-static two-and three dimensional problems of elasticity.
3) Solve various two-dimensional plane strain and plane stress problems using the Airy stress function.
4) Able to apply their knowledge of solid mechanics and materials science to model the mechanical behavior of different kinds of structural materials.
5) Stress and strain analysis results obtained from analytical and numerical analysis will be able to interpreted more correctly.

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction and general concepts,
2) stress and strain, Stress and strain components in Cartesian coordinates,
3) Equilibrium equations in polar coordinates, Three dimensional stress state at a point,
4) Strain and strain components, Compatibility equations. (Homework subject is given / Homework Mid-term Exam Week is delivered).
5) Stress-strain equations, Thermo-elastic equations, St Venant principle, (Presentation Subject is given / Presentations are submitted starting from the Tenth Lesson Week).
6) Two dimensional elasticity problems, Plain strain Plain stress,
7) Generalised Hook’s equations, Elastic constants and their interrelation, Virtual work,
8) Midterm Exam. Airy stress function, solution of two dimensional problems with stress function, Superposition method in stress function, (Homework Mid-term Exam Week is delivered /The Project Subject is given / The project is delivered in the thirteenth week of the lessons).
9) Bending of beams,
10) Stress concentration in discontinuous locations, (Presentations are submitted starting from the Tenth Lesson Week).
11) Torsion of noncircular cross section of members, Membrane analogy,
12) Stress analysis of axial symmetric members, Thick walled pressurised cylinders,
13) axial stress and strain, Combined (Compound) cylinders, (The project is delivered in the thirteenth week of the lessons).
14) Rotating cylinders and disks, Rotating pressurised cylinders. (Excuse Examination is held on the lesson day at the lesson time).
