Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Understand the basic theories that relate to failure analysis of ductile and brittle materials and odd cases. Understand the basic theories that relate to failure analysis of ductile and brittle materials and odd cases
2) Can make damage diagnosis and damage analysis. Develop the academic abilities required to failure analysis of various practical mechanical elements
3) Learns to design the correct design characteristics of the implants and determine the factors that affect it. know implants (prosthesis) definitions and uses.

1. Introduction, implants (prosthesis) definitions and uses 2. Need and scope of failure analysis and prevention 3. Fundamentals of fracture–definitions, Fracture modes, Ductile fracture 4. Brittle Fracture, Cleavage and intergranular fractures 5. Fracture mechanics, Stress concentration, the Griffith criterion, Fracture toughness 6. Assembly, Service and maintenance effects 7. Impact fracture testing, The ductile-to-brittle transition 8. Midterm Exam 9. Fatigue, the Wöhler curve, Fatigue probability curves 10. Crack initiation and crack propagation in fatigue 11. NDT for failure analysis 12. Environmental factors affecting fatigue, design against fatigue 13. Creep, Steady-state creep, Effects of stress and temperature on creep 14. Creep mechanisms, Linear-viscous creep, Power-law creep 15. Diffusion and Dislocation creep, the Larson-Miller parameter, High temperature alloys, Student Presentations 16. Final Exam
