Turkish Political Life
Throughout the semester, contemporary approaches to democracy and democratic institutions introduced in the last half century will be examined. In this context, the course will consist of three main parts. In the first part of the course, "the second wave of democracy" is an example of one of Turkey's democratic transition experience will be discussed in detail. In the second part of the course, a general theoretical framework regarding democracy and transition to democracy will be drawn. In the third part of the course, in the light of Huntington's conceptual framework, we will focus on the experiences of transition to democracy in Latin America, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet countries, which constitute the "third wave of democracy", and will be discussed amongst these countries and with the countries of North America and Western Europe, which constitute the "first wave of democracy". similarities and differences will be compared.
