The course will start with a conceptual and historical introduction to the concept of civil society. We will review some of the early major theoretical statements on civil society. The third part of the course will focus on Turkey, and start with the historical analysis of the idea of civil society. It will involve analyses of the current situation of civil society in Turkey. Civil society and its activities will be examined in the light of the theory/theories and critiques, scholarly and empirical case studies, and students’ fieldwork.
