Course Contents

Having general knowledge of film analyzing. Having ability to question the film products, content and having able to analyze their expressions

Weekly Schedule

1) Characterizations of course content and general outlines. The importance of cinema as a visual means of communication.
2) What is a Theory: defining the concept and functions of theory in the area of film studies. General information on major film theories. Introduction to formalism-realism debates in film theories; explanation of discussions on reproduction of reality and the power of artistic formation in cinema
3) Formalist theory of Eisenstein and conflict (dramatic policy) based editing
4) Formalist Theory 1. "Cinema is a language" Hugo Munsterberg, Rudolph Arnheim 2. Balazs, Pudovkin and Kuleshov.
5) Realistic Theories 1. Andre Bazin, "Cinema is the optical and mechanical reproduction of reality", the mise-en-scene and depth of field. 2. Kracauer: Physical Reality and Narrative.
6) Traditional and Modern Narrative: Godard. Deleuze and Time-Image. Auteur Theory and Criticism: "The creative writer, director and Andrew Sarris"
7) Film semiotics: From Saussure and Pierce to C. Metz
8) Midterm Examination.
9) Micro Analysis and basic elements: scene, visualization, cinematography, lighting, composition.
10) Micro Analysis and its basic elements: theme, symbolism, sound, editing, SFX,
11) Film Analysis
12) Genre Theory and Criticism: "Genre and melodrama as a mode of a view of cinema"
13) Spectatorship in cinema and reception analysis
14) Film Analysis: Movie, Serial, Sit-Com.
