Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Define crystal structure defects of metals and their effect on the mechanical behavior of material
2) Explain solid solution formation, conditions of making solid-solution, reactions of the steel during annealing and ways to benefit from phase diagrams
3) Comment on structure of iron-carbon alloys, physical changes that may occur in the structure of the material as a result of slow or fast heating and cooling
4) Determine the volumetric changes during hardening and tempering
5) Evaluate the structure defects that occur during annealing
6) Define quenching temperature and the effect on the mechanical properties of the material
7) Recognize the surface hardening methods
8) Select the heat treatment method according to the type of steel
9) Make the inspection and tests applied to the materials after heat treatment

Course Contents

1 - Steel Structure 2 - Steel Tempering 3 - Hardening of Steel 4 - steels Heat Treatment Methods Available

Weekly Schedule

1) Steel structure, crystal lattice structures, crystal structure errors, the effect of crystal structure defects on the mechanical properties of the material
2) Phase structure, a solid solution formation and conditions of making solid solution ,reactions in the steel during annealing (eutectic reaction, peritectic reaction, allotropy, ötektoit reaction), ways to benefit from phase diagrams
3) Iron-carbon alloy system, structure of the iron-carbon alloy under low and high temperature,slow cooling and transformation of the structure during heating, physical changes during heating
4) Fast cooling (quenching) and the tempering process, the concept and determination of critical cooling rate, structural transformation after fast cooling process (quenching), structural transformation under fixed temperature, structural changes during tempering , the volumetric changes during hardening
5) Tempering of steel, annealing methods (normalization, annealing, stress relieving,recrystallization annealing , diffusion-annealed)
6) Construction errors that occur during annealing
7) Steel hardening (quenching), water-making process, performing water-making process,the effect of water-making on the mechanical properties of materials, determination of water-making temperature and effects of temperature on hardness
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Tempering-making process, effect of tempering process on the structure of the material and mechanical properties,annealing process of low and high carbon steels, determining tempering temperature
10) Surface hardening: The concept and methods of surface hardening, surface hardening with cementation method, surface hardening with flame, diffusion hardening, surface hardening with the help of laser
11) Determine appropriate method for heat treatment of steels
12) The hardening environments with heat treatment methods appropriate for steel type and standard
13) Methods for material inspection after the heat treatment
14) Shape changes that occur after annealing
15) The measures that can be taken to reduce distortion and stress in material after heat treatment
16) Final examination
