For admission into a doctoral program with a master’s degree, applicants must have an ALES exam score relevant to the program applied, not being less than 55 standard points or equivalent score in GRE general or GMAT. For admission into a doctoral program with a bachelor’s degree, applicants must have an ALES exam score relevant to the program applied, not being less than 70 standard points or an equivalent score in GRE or GMAT. The candidates should have at least 55 points from any of the English / French / German languages of UDS or KPDS (Governmental Foreign Language Proficiency Test)or an equivalent score from the exams recognized by The Council of Higher Education(CoHE) such as; IELTS or TOEFL . Applicants who meet the requirements above are eligible to take the scientific interview conducted by the department. Scientific achievement-level score of an applicant is determined by taking 50 percent of score from ALES test or an equivalent score from GRE or GMAT , 30 percent of score from oral exam and 20 percent of cumulative grade point average. In order for a candidate to be successful the scientific grade level must be at least 70. Student admission is possible at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters basing on the quota specified by the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences.

In order to be awarded a degree from PhD programs, candidates are required to succeed in 7 courses, 2 seminars, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The total workload to be accomplished for PhD programs is 240 ECTS.
Program Genel Profili Temel bilimler veya mühendislik alanlarında lisans ve/veya yüksek lisans derecesine sahip olan öğrenciler, doktora programlarında aldıkları dersler ile çalışma alanlarında derinlemesine bilgi sahibi olurken, bir problem üzerinde tez ve hipotez geliştirerek çözüme gidecek yöntemleri belirler ve uygular. Candidates, holding Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Basic Sciences or Engineering are able to specify and apply probable solutions for a problem by suggesting thesis and hypothesis while being equipped with profound knowledge in their field of expertise. The doctorate programs in a variety of departments of the institute cover various courses offered with an interdisciplinary approach in accordance with their fields of interests. The updated laboratories equipped with high-tech infrastructures enable candidates to conduct experimental studies on their research subjects.
Genel Bilgi Kimya Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalında, Doktora programına yönelik eğitim verilmektedir. Eğitim dili Türkçe’dir. Ancak ders planında yer alan derslerin bir kısmı İngilizce olarak verilmektedir. Ph.D. program is available within the Chemical Engineering Department. The language of instruction Turkish but some courses are offered in English. Thesis subjects are on the specialization areas of the academic staff such as polymers, catalysis, combustion, pervaporation, quality, petrochemicals, biotechnology, chemical reaction engineering, fuel cells and electrochemistry.

So as to be granted a degree from the program, a student is required to be successful in all the courses offered by the program and reach 240 ECTS in total, pass the qualifying exam and successfully complete a dissertation proposal and defend a doctoral dissertation, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3,00 out of 4,00.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

This program, which contains 240 ECTS in total, is for students who have Master of Science degree. Total ECTS in the Doctor of Philosophy program consists of at least seven courses (56 ECTS) excluding field expertise course, two seminar courses, qualification exam, dissertation proposal, thesis study. Student orally defends his thesis in front of a jury. In order to submit and defend the thesis, a journal article publication originated from thesis study in a peer-reviewed national or international journal is required. It is mandatory to attend to at least 70% of theoretical and 80% of other types of courses. The overall grade of a course is determined by evaluation of midterm and final exams, projects, seminars, quizzes, attendance, homeworks, applications, labs, and alike.
