In civil engineering department, the main divisions in masters of Science are Structures, Mechanics, Earthquake, Hydraulics, Materials of Construction, Geotechnics and Transportation. In these programs, it is aimed the students can make academic research on their topics, can ask questions that sentiminize the topic and develop hypothesis to solve the problems using all research backgrounds.

So as to be admitted to the program, candidates are required to hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in Civil Engineering. The minimum test scores of ALES and UDS or KPDS (Governmental Foreign Language Proficiency Test)or an equivalent score from the exams for candidates are specified in general admission requirement by the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences. Applicants who meet these requirements are eligible to take the scientific interview conducted by the department.

In order to be awarded a degree from PhD programs, candidates are required to succeed in 7 courses, 2 seminars, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The total workload to be accomplished for PhD programs is 240 ECTS.

Candidates, holding Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Basic Sciences or Engineering are able to specify and apply probable solutions for a problem by suggesting thesis and hypothesis while being equipped with profound knowledge in their field of expertise. The doctorate programs in a variety of departments of the institute cover various courses offered with an interdisciplinary approach in accordance with their fields of interests. So as to be granted a degree from the program, a student is required to be successful in all the courses offered by the program and reach 240 ECTS in total, pass the qualifying exam and successfully complete and defend a doctoral dissertation, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3,00 out of 4,00.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

  • To be able to research, comprehend and design an original subject related to the field at an advanced level; to be able to critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate new and complex problems related to these subjects
  • Examines, analyses and solves the problems in the field by using scientific research methods and independently conducts a study requiring expertise

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment is carried out basing on “Kocaeli University, General Examination Regulations for Graduate Degrees”. Depending on the nature of the course, various instruments such as; midterm exams, final exams, projects, assignments, presentations, short exams are involved in the assessment process. After succeeding the courses, students take the qualifying exam followed by thesis study which will be evaluated by the thesis committee. The instruments and the dates of the exams are declared to the student upon the registry of a course. Please see the course structure page for detailed information about each course.
