So as to be admitted to the program, candidates are required to hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution, to have a minimum score of 55 from ALES(Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam held in Turkey) or an equivalent score from GRE or GMAT , to get a minimum score of 55 from national foreign language proficiency tests such as UDS, KPDS(Governmental Foreign Language Proficiency Test)or equivalent score from internationally valid tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. Applicants who meet the requirements above are eligible to take the scientific interview conducted by the department. Scientific achievement-level score of an applicant is determined by taking 50 percent of score from ALES test or an equivalent score from GRE or GMAT , 30 percent of score from oral exam and 20 percent of cumulative grade point average. In order for a candidate to be successful the scientific grade level must be at least 70. Student admission is possible at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters basing on the quota specified by the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences.

In order to be awarded a degree from PhD programs, candidates are required to succeed in 7 courses, 2 seminars, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The total workload to be accomplished for PhD programs is 240 ECTS.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation of a course during a half-year term is made by means of midterm examinations, projects, seminars, presentations, field work, quizzes, homework, applications, laboratories and similar means. Studies during a half-year term, types and rates of measurement and evaluation are at a range between 30% and 70% and evaluation weight of during and ending half-year term are announced to students in the system. Midterm and final examinations are executed at dates as given in the academic calendar. Period-end success grades are given by the academic who is responsible of the course, based on midterm and final examination grades as well as studies carried out during the term and attendance. In order to be eligible for the half-year term-end measurement and evaluation, a student has to have attended at least 70% of theoric courses that are registered in for the first time and at least 80% of application and/or laboratory courses. Any student who fails to meet this condition is given an absence grade (letter D in Turkish standing for “Devamsız”). In case of course repetition too, these conditions have to be met. Only in case of repeating a theoric course, attendance of which is taken, the condition of attendance is not asked for. A course may have been identified as an ongoing study at the beginning of the period. Measurement and evaluation of an ongoing study is transformed to a success grade, latest at the end of half-year tem-end evaluation period. Period-end success grades of these courses are determined based on the studies carried out by the students during the period. Evaluation of each one of during and ending half-year studies of all courses is quantified out of 100 points.
