Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1) Gain a better understanding of literary texts through a variety of short stories from different countries.
2) Develop a preparedness towards the problems to be encountered in real life.
3) Gain an aesthetical outlook towards life, developing a philosophical and ideological view through literary texts.
4) Make an analysis of the historical, cultural and political background of the literary texts.
5) Compare and contrast the western civilization with that of themselves in view of politics and culture
6) Acquire the ability to appreciate the values and attitudes of different people and cultures and to be civil and tolerant against different cultures.
7) Acquire the ability to analyze the works about civilizations, cultures and thoughts.
8) Develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
9) Acquire the ability to carry out the analysis of short stories in terms of areas like plot structure, character analysis, and setting.

The course covers selected short stories from both nineteenth and twentieth centuries may vary according to the choice of the instructor. Tentative text may include stories written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Anton Chekhov, Guy De Maupassant, Kate Chopin, Bret Harte, Katherine Anne Porter, etc.
