Course Contents

This course covers;introduction, course qualifications and tools, shape and size of the earth, Units and its conversions, scale, the classification of maps, reading of maps, fundemental calculations on the plane, map projections, UTM projection and system, national map index, map applications using GPS navigation.

Weekly Schedule

1) Introduction, course content and syllabus of the introduction, Information for students about the course competencies, Clarifying course materials and course-related conditions, resources and lecture notes.
2) Shape and dimension of the world; the concepts of geoit, ellipsoid, coordinate and altitude.
3) Units of angle, distance and area. Arc concept.
4) Map scale calculations, Classification of maps
5) Reading of horizontal coordinates and distances from a map.
6) Reading of altitude from a map. Readings bearings and horizontal angels from a map.
7) Geodetic fundamental problems: Bearings and horizontal distance calculations on the plane.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Geodetic fundamental problems: Horizontal coordinate calculations on the plane.
10) Slope, slope angle and slope distance calculations.
11) Gauss-Kruger projection, UTM system.
12) Conversion of 3 and 6 degrees zones.
13) Navigation with manual GPS .
