Course Contents

The contents of the course include main theoretical approaches to the concept of culture and main informations about cultural signs, products and personalities that have an important place in the history of culture and civilisation.

Weekly Schedule

1) General information on the course; defining the purposes and curriculum of the class.
2) Defining the conceptual background: explaining various definitions of “culture” in respect of different perspectives and relationships between culture, human, nature, language, communication, civilisation, society and production.
3) From Biological to Social Evolution: Emergence of Human, Primitive Communities and Birth of Culture in the Prehistoric Era
4) Transition to Civilized Society and Initial Civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Anatolia
5) Ancient Greek Civilization, City-states, Colonialism in Ancient Times
6) Ancient Eastern Civilizations: Persia, India, Chin cultures, Encounters of East and West
7) Origins of the Western Culture: Hellenistic Culture, Roman and Byzantium Civilizations
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Culture in the middle Ages: Christian Europe and Islam, the Crusades, Encounters of East and West
10) Renaissance, Reform and Liberation Movements in Europe
11) Colonialism, Encounters of American, African and European Cultures.
12) New world, Industrial Revolution.
13) The French Revolution, Emergence of Nationalism and Nation States; French and American Declarations of Independence
14) Cultural Transformations of 20th Century: Modernization, World Wars, Urban Cultures, the Fall of Colonialism and Movements for Independency
15) Debates on Culture in 21th centuary: Globalisation, Emergence of “Glocal”, Global-Local Cultures, Interculturalism, Mass Culture etc.
