Course Contents

This course defines the “gender”; summarizes theoretical approaches as feminism, masculinity studies and queer theory related to gender as a socially constructed identity; discusses gender stereotypes; analyses exemplary media texts in order to examine the representation of women, men and marginalized sexual identities.

Weekly Schedule

1) General information on course; defining the purposes and curriculum of the class.
2) Defining the “gender”. Providing background information on “identities”, explaining the social construction of gender and gender roles.
3) Introduction to basic theoretical approaches on identity and gender; defining the patriarchal ideology; explaining the relationship between gender and power relations.
4) Explore the discussions on importance of media on the constructions of identities and the relationship between media and gender.
5) Definitions of basic concepts and approaches about sexual discrimination, explanations on direct and indirect forms of gender segregation, dicsussion on the relationship between media and discrimination.
6) Women’s studies and gender: discussions on social roles of women and introduction to feminist theories.
7) Defining different approaches within feminism as liberal feminism, Marxist and socialist feminism, radical feminism, ecological feminism etc and summarizing the views of best-known theorists.
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Feminism and media studies: Representation of women in media and feminist criticism.
10) Analyses of exemplary media texts in terms of representation of women.
11) Introduction to masculinity studies. Essential theoretical approaches to social construction of masculinity.
12) Analyses of exemplary media texts in terms of representation of masculinity.
13) Discussions on representations of marginalized sexual identities and introduction to “queer theory”.
14) Analyses of exemplary media texts in terms of representation of marginalized sexual identities.
15) Summative review and general evaluation of the course.
16) Final examination
