Course Contents

This course provides students with the knowledge of the historical development of human rights, the classification of human rights, the occurance of the term democracy, the principles of democracy, the historical development of the regulations on human rights in and out of Turkey, main constitution in regard to human rights, the latest development on human rights in Turkey, national and international aspect of protecting the human rights, the works run by the UN, Human Rights Universal Declaration, the works run by the Council of Europe, the works run by OSCE, Helsinki Final Document, the Paris Condition, Europe Human Rights Court.

Weekly Schedule

1) Meeting and general information about lesson.
2) Definition of the concepts of human rights, rights, freedom, responsibility; from the first ages to 1900's, the historical development of human rights.
3) From 1900's to present, the historical development of human rights: the period of 1914-1945, the Cold War era.
4) From 1900's to present, the historical development of human rights: since the 1990', human rights in the New World order, the effects of globalization and human rights
5) The emergence and development of the concept of democracy, fundamental principles of democracy, the emergence and development of the concept of the constitutional state.
6) The principles for the limitation of rights and freedoms, basic rights and freedoms classification: the first, second and third generation of rights
7) Basic human rights regulations in the world and Turkey: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Conventions and international control problem
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Basic human rights regulations in the world and Turkey: The United Nations Convention on Civil and Political Rights and the United Nations Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; According to UN Cnventions the right of Self-determination.
10) The United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and general situation of women's rights around the world and in Turkey, the Turkish Penal Code and women rights, the concept of positive discrimination.
11) The United Nations Convention on Rights of the Children and general situation of children rights in the world and Turkey.
12) Studies carried out by the Council of Europe and the OSCE, the Helsinki Final Act, the Charter of Paris, the European Court of Human Rights.
13) The European Court of Human Rights and sample cases related Turkey
14) Debate: What are religious & Ethnic rights and freedoms? What aren't religious & Ethnic rights and freedoms?
15) Basic human rights regulations in the world and Turkey: the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, historical and contemporary discussions on the question of genocide.
16) Final examination
