Course Contents

Candidates are provided with in-depth knowledge on the "mass housing" projects that are an important aspect of the "urban transformation" projects which is the driving force of the current paradigm of city formation, and their relation to the "place" via Kocaeli based on their different physical, social and cultural frameworks, mass housing/urban transformation relations, and whether these settlements are sufficient to be regarded qualified.

Weekly Schedule

1) The new definitions/shifting social structures of production and product as a result of the industrial revolution
2) The reflections of the new urban living, that is reshaped by the industrialization and modernization, on settlements and living units
3) The examination of increase of the demand in housing and related site speculation and its effects on urban progress
4) Socio-Economical and spatial examination of the emergence and progress of the city shaped through industrial revolution and modernization in Turkey
5) Examination of settlements that have been affected by the industrial revolution through its effect on urban form and urban living, and related student presentatons
6) Student presentations regarding the housing profile in the period that has been shaped through industrial revolution and modernization in Turkey
7) What is "Mass Housing"?
8) Midterm examination/Assessment
9) Examination of "Mass Housing" projects and their site selections through examples from the world and Turkey
10) Questioning whether a mass housing settlement is sufficient to be regarded qualified
11) Analysis regarding the "mass housing" settlements, a signifier for "urban transformation" and its relation to "place"
12) Relations between mass housing/urban transformation based on cases with different physical, social and cultural frameworks in Kocaeli.
13) Evaluation of the connections between the regions's identity and project, in the selected case
