In addition to general admission requirements, a candidate is required to hold a bachelor’s degree from the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation and with a master’s degree in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy or hold a MSc degree in Special Education of Mental Retardation.

In order to be awarded a degree from PhD programs, candidates are required to succeed in 7 courses, 2 seminars, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The total workload to be accomplished for PhD programs is 240 ECTS.
Program Genel Profili Sağlık bilimi alanlarında yüksek lisans derecesine sahip olan öğrenciler, doktora programlarında aldıkları dersler ile çalışma alanlarında derinlemesine bilgi sahibi olurken, bir problem üzerinde tez ve hipotez geliştirerek çözüme gidecek yöntemleri belirler ve uygular. Doktora programlarında öğrencilere çalışma alanlarına uygun olarak, disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla, ilgi alanlarına göre enstitünün çeşitli anabilim dallarında dersler sunulur. Candidates holding a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences are able to specify and apply probable solution methods for a problem by developing thesis and hypothesis while being equipped with profound knowledge in their field of expertise thanks to the courses offered by the doctorate program. The doctorate programs in a variety of departments of the institute cover various elective courses offered with an interdisciplinary approach in accordance with their field of interests. Candidates are provided with the opportunity to conduct experimental studies on their field of expertise in updated and modern laboratories equipped with high technological infrastructures.
Genel Bilgi İş ve uğraşı terapisi, sağlığı iyileştirmek ve sürdürmek, patolojiyi düzeltmek ve azaltmak amacıyla kişinin belirlenen aktivite ve görevlerde performansını düzeltme, güçlendirme ve artırmaya; adaptasyon ve üretkenlik için gerekli olan beceri ve fonksiyonları öğrenmeye katılımını sağlayan bir bilim ve sanattır. Temel ilkesi kişinin üretken bir yaşam için önemli olan görev ve rolleri yaşam boyunca kendisi ve çevresi açısından hoşnutlukla yerine getirebilme kapasitesini sağlamaktır. Occupational therapy is a branch of both art and science which involves learning the skills required so as to increase one’s performance in set of activities and tasks to maintain health, to heal and reduce the pathology, to strengthen and to increase adaptability and productivity. The basic principle covers the capacity of accomplishing tasks and roles that are to be carried out for a more productive life in a pleasant way for him/herself and for his/her surrounding, as well. The aim of occupational therapy is to help a person so as to achieve the maximum level for an independent life maximize by improving reduced capacity of an individual caused by an accident or a deformity. By this program, it is aimed to train occupational therapists equipped with necessary skills and knowledge about the field of study.

So as to be granted a degree, students are required to complete the courses and, pass the qualifying exam and successfully complete a scientifically valid dissertation approved by an academic jury and accomplish 240 ECTS credits in total.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Depending on the nature of the course, various instruments such as; mid-term exams, final exams, projects, assignments, presentations, are involved in the assessment process. After succeeding the courses, students take the qualifying exam followed by a thesis study which will be evaluated by the thesis committee.
