In order to be awarded a PhD degree, candidates are required to succeed in 7 courses, 2 seminars, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The total workload to be accomplished for PhD programs is 240 ECTS.
Program Genel Profili Sağlık bilimi alanlarında yüksek lisans derecesine sahip olan öğrenciler, doktora programlarında aldıkları dersler ile çalışma alanlarında derinlemesine bilgi sahibi olurken, bir problem üzerinde tez ve hipotez geliştirerek çözüme gidecek yöntemleri belirler ve uygular. Doktora programlarında öğrencilere çalışma alanlarına uygun olarak, disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla, ilgi alanlarına göre enstitünün çeşitli anabilim dallarında dersler sunulur. Candidates holding a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences are able to specify and apply probable solution methods for a problem by developing thesis and hypothesis while being equipped with profound knowledge in their field of expertise thanks to the courses offered by the doctorate program. The doctorate programs in a variety of departments of the institute cover various elective courses offered with an interdisciplinary approach in accordance with their field of interests. Candidates are provided with the opportunity to conduct experimental studies on their field of expertise in updated and modern laboratories equipped with high technological infrastructures.
Genel Bilgi Kocaeli Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 1995-1996 öğretim yılında eğitime başlamıştır. Bu dönemde Biyokimya anabilim dalı iki öğretim üyesi ile kurulmuş olup, 1. ve 2. sınıf biyokimya dersleri ve pratikleri anabilim dalı tarafından verilmiştir. Beş yüksek lisans ve bir ihtisas öğrencisi eğitime başlamış ve bir öğretim görevlisinin katılmasıyla kadrosunu oluşturmuştur. Rutin Biyokimya hastane hizmetleri ise bu dönemde Biyokimya anabilim dalı öğretim üyeleri ve asistanları tarafından anabilim dalına bağlı olarak sürdürülmüştür. Bugüne kadar anabilim dalında 6 yüksek lisans ve 5 ihtisas tezi tamamlanmıştır. Anabilim dalında mezuniyet öncesi ve sonrası eğitim programları devam etmektedir. Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine started training activities in the academic year 1995-1996. It was founded by two faculty members in the Department of Biochemistry. Courses and practices of 1st and 2nd class of biochemistry are offered by the main branch of science. The education started with five master students and one specialized master's degree student, and with the involvement of one more lecturers, the academic staff was completed. Routine hospital services during this period were carried out by biochemistry faculty members and their assistants, depending on the divisions. Up to present, 6 master's and 5 specialized master's thesis were completed in the department. Undergraduate and postgraduate training programs are still continuing in the department. Several completed and run-on projects are available in the department. A large part of these researches have been published in national and international journals.

So as to be granted a degree, students are required to complete the courses listed in the schedule successfully and fulfill 240 ECTS credits in total, pass the qualifying exam and successfully complete a scientifically valid dissertation approved by an academic jury.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Each semester a midterm and a final exam is conducted. Upon the completion of the doctoral dissertation, candidates defend their dissertation in the presence of an academic jury.
