The aim of the doctoral program is to prepare a new generation of scientists with an in-depth understanding of stem cell biology who will conduct cutting-edge research in this rapidly evolving field. Genel Bilgi Kocaeli Üniversitesi Kök Hücre ve Gen Tedavileri Araştırma ve Uygulama Merkezinin (KÖGEM) kuruluş çalışmaları Kasım 2003’de Rektör Prof.Dr. Baki KOMSUOĞLU’nun direktifleriyle hazırlanan proje kapsamında başlamıştır. Kocaeli Üniversitesinin yetkili kurullarınca onaylandıktan sonra KÖGEM’in kuruluşu için YÖK’e başvurulması kararlaştırılmıştır. YÖK Yürütme Kurulunun 11.05.2004 tarihindeki toplantısında KÖGEM’in kurulması uygun bulunmuş ve 03.07.2004 tarihli ve 25511 sayılı Resmi Gazete’de Yönetmeliği yayımlanmasıyla Merkez Resmi kimliğini kazanmıştır. Şubat 2007’de Rektör Prof.Dr. Sezer Şener Komsuoğlu’nun direktif ve destekleriyle alt-yapı kuruluş çalışmalarına başlanmış ve 21 Kasım 2007 tarihinde Umuttepe yerleşkesinde faaliyete geçmiştir. 2010 yılından KOÜ Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü Kök Hücre AD kuruldu ve Kök Hücre ve Doku Yenilenmesi yüksek lisans programı öğrenci kaydına başlamıştır. Kocaeli Üniversitesi KÖgem ve Kök Hücre AD, kök hücre, hücresel tedaviler, doku/organ mühendisliği ve gen tedavileri alanlarında uluslar arası düzeyde patentlenebilir, bilimsel etki etmeni yüksek dergilerde yayımlanabilir ve de atıf alabilir düzeyde bilimsel veriler üreterek evrensel bilime katkı, ürettiği bilgi ve teknolojileri uygulamak ve eğitim-öğretime destek vermek amacıyla kurulmuş bir Ar-Ge merkezidir. Merkez amacına ulaşabilmek için aşağıdaki çalışmaları yapmaktadır; a) Merkezin kuruluş amacına uygun alt-yapı çalışmaları çeşitli kaynaklar (Üniversite, TÜBİTAK ve bağış gibi) kullanılarak (yaklaşık 1300.000 TL) büyük oranda tamamlamıştır, b) Uluslar arası düzeyde nitelikli bilimsel yayına dönüşen Ar-Ge projelerini KOÜ araştırma fonu, TÜBİTAK ve çeşitli vakıf-dernek destekleriyle sürdürmektedir, c) Yurt içindeki ve yurt dışındaki üniversite, araştırma kurumları, kamu ve özel sektör kuruluşları ile işbirliği yapılarak ortak Ar-Ge projeleri geliştirilmekte ve danışmanlık hizmetleri verilmektedir, d) Ülkemizde ilk kez “Kök Hücre ve Yenileyici Tıp” başlıklı Yüksek Lisans programı YÖK tarafından onaylanmış ve Güz döneminde öğrenci alımına başlanacaktır, e) Düzenlenen kurslar (12 adet) ile ülkemizdeki araştırmacılara sertifikasyon eğitimi verilmektedir, f) Ülkenin ‘Ulusal Kök Hücre Politikalarının’ belirlenmesinde ülke çıkarları doğrultusunda diğer eşidi ve üst kurumlarla işbirliği yapılmaktadır. Kök Hücre ve Gen Tedavileri Araştırma ve Uygulama Merkezi kurulduğu 2007 tarihinden Kök Hücre AD ise kurulduğu 2010 tarihinden günümüze yaptığımız bilimsel çalışmalarla evrensel bilime katkı sunmanın yanında düzenlediği kurslarla (18 adet) birçok araştırmacıya sertifikasyon eğitimi veren merkezimizde halihazırda yürürlükteki Tübitak, BAP ve uluslar arası projelerde bursiyer olarak görev alarak, hem akademik eğitimlerini sürdüren hem de Ar-Ge kabiliyetlerini geliştiren şu ana kadar kayıtlı 14 yüksek lisans öğrencimiz (4’ü mezun olmuştur) mevcuttur. Initiative studies to establish the Center for Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Practice (SCGTR) were started in November 2003 upon instruction by Prof.Dr. Baki KOMSUOĞLU, the president of Kocaeli University. With the endorsement by The Council of Higher Education and the related publication in the Official Gazette on 03.07.2004 the center gained its identity. With the support of Prof.Dr. Sezer Şener Komsuoğlu, current president of KOU, studies to build the infrastructure of the center were started in February 2007, and the center came into activity in the Umuttepe Campus in November 21st, 2007. Kocaeli University Center for Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Practice is an R&D center established to contribute to the global science by providing outstanding scientific data in the fields of stem cells, cellular therapies, tissue/organ engineering and gene therapies that can be published in high impact journals and patented internationally, and to implement the gained knowledge and technology and to give support to training in the aforementioned fields. To fulfill its goals, SCGTR performs the following activities; a) The infrastructure of the center is completed substantially through funds (ca. 1.300.000 TL) from different foundations (KOU, TÜBİTAK and donations) b) Working on R&D projects that generate data qualifying to turn into internationally recognized scientific publications through funding c) Providing educational and technical support to projects in collaboration with the research fund administrations of Kocaeli University and other universities d) Collaborating with the national and international universities, research foundations, public and private companies to progress on R&D projects and giving consultancy e) The “ Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine” graduate program was approved by The Council of Higher Education for the first time in Turkey and will start accepting students in the Fall semester f) Training in the field and certificates are given (12 till now) to the researchers in Turkey g) Collaborating with its counterparts and higher foundations to establish country’s “ National Stem Cell Politics”

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Program Competencies

  • To understand the interdisciplinary interactions related to the fields of stem cells, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering; Ability to reach original results by using knowledge that requires expertise in analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating new and complex ideas.
  • Ability to evaluate and use new information in the field of stem cell and regenerative medicine with a systematic approach.
  • Ability to expand the boundaries of knowledge in the field by publishing at least one scientific article on stem cell and regenerative medicine in national and/or international peer-reviewed journals and producing an original work.
  • Ability to develop new ideas and methods related to the field by using high-level mental processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making in the fields of stem cells, regenerative medicine, cancer and tissue engineering.
